UH-Hilo baseball coach stepping down

HILO » University of Hawaii at Hilo baseball coach Joey Estrella is stepping down.

UH Hilo Director of Athletics Dexter Irvin announced today that Estrella will step down after the 2013 season.

The Vulcans' coach enters his 37th season with a 648-897-5 record.

Estrella's first winning season came in the 1980s with a 25-19 record that started a string of 11 consecutive winning seasons.

His 1983 team had a 41-10 record and would make their first NAIA Area Playoffs. Estrella's 1986 team went on to make a first appearance in the NAIA World Series. His teams would also make the World Series two of the next three years.

Estrella was selected 1989 Area Coach of the Year.
