Hawaii public schools review security; counseling available during break

Hawaii public school administrators reviewed school security procedures with Honolulu police after 26 people died in a mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school. 

The state Department of Education says its safety, security and emergency preparedness officials met with Honolulu police this morning. 

Schools Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi says all of Hawaii’s public schools have emergency procedures in place. She says the department’s teams revisited these procedures with heightened awareness. 

Matayoshi says counseling services are available for students, parents and teachers who may need them. 

Schools begin winter break this weekend. The department says parents and students should contact their school or the department if they need counseling during the break.

It is extremely difficult to protect school children from senseless killings such as that at the elementary school in Connecticut today. Most schools in Hawaii are quite large, many with two floors and several entrances. It may give people a sense of security to have security guards assigned to every school, but that would be a false sense of security because a security guard cannot be everywhere at the same time, so it would be impossible to cover all possible routes into a school. It probably would require a platoon of security guards to completely surround a school to do that. No school can afford that. The best way to protect school children would be to build a 10-foot high chain link fence around the entire campus, top it with barbed wire, and require everyone to enter through one entrance with a metal detector and an armed guard. That certainly would deter a would-be murderer, but would not completely stop one who is intent on getting in such as finding a way to get over the fence out of sight of the security guard. It is a problem without a foolproof solution.

Agree - it's a tough one, especially if the shooter is a former/current student and/or insider who knows the layout of the school. So very sad. Christmas will never be the same for those families or for Newtown, CT.
