The National Weather Service has extended a high surf advisory for east-facing shores to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

It had been set to expire on Friday evening, then was extended to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The weather service says to expect “very rough” surf of 6- to 9-feet with locally higher sets for east-facing shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii island. It warns that rough breaking waves will create hazardous conditions in the surf zone, including dangerous rip currents.

Meanwhile, a small craft advisory is in effect for Hawaiian waters through 6 p.m. Tuesday as fresh to strong tradewinds and hazardous seas continue through midweek. The tradewinds are driven by a strong high-pressure system north of the islands that will strengthen on Monday, the weather service said.
