California visitor breaks ankle in Maui's Iao Valley

Maui fire rescue personnel airlifted a 44-year-old California man who broke his ankle while hiking this afternoon at Iao Valley State Park.

Fire personnel were alerted at 3:20 p.m., hiked 45 minutes along a trail above the lookout and found the man.

He was taken by helicopter to a landing zone and was transported by Medic 1 with a broken ankle to Maui Memorial Medical Center, a Maui fire official said in an email.

The man was visiting from Blackhawk, Calif., a Maui fire official said.
