Officials with the state and city say an overflowing sewer sent an estimated 2,250 gallons of untreated wastewater into a storm drain feeding local streams.

The state health department on Thursday advised the public to stay out of Nuuanu Stream from Kuakini Avenue to Nimitz Highway.

The city's Department of Environmental Services says roots clogged a pipe, causing the untreated wastewater out a manhole and into a storm drain.

The city department says water samples were being taken.
