Biologist and volunteers evacuated from remote island

A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist and four volunteers arrived safely in Honolulu early this morning after being evacuated from a remote research station within French Frigate Shoals, the service reported.
A devastating storm rolled through the Northwest Hawaiian Islands on Dec. 9, damaging all facilities on Tern Island, including the group's living quarters, storage facilities and boat sheds. Communication systems and solar panels were also compromised.
No one was injured, and the evacuees had enough food and water while waiting for rescue, service officials said.
The field station is 490 miles northwest of Honolulu and provides year-round access for biologists to do research, student-based education and restoration projects, as well as to monitor hundreds of albatross, wedge-tailed shearwaters and Bonin petrels.
