Change in winds could bring muggy weather, perhaps vog

Say goodbye to the trade winds and hello to Kona weather through the weekend.

National Weather Service forecasters say the cooling northeast trades winds, which turned into southeasterly Kona winds Wednesday night, could bring vog and humid conditions to the islands starting today.

It could also be cloudy and rainy New Year's Eve and New Year's Day as a weather system moves over Kauai and Oahu Monday evening.

John Bravender, a meteorologist with the Honolulu National Weather Service office, said he doesn't expect much vog until the end of the weekend.

"It's possible, but I don't think it will be that much of a problem this weekend until let's say Sunday or Monday," he said.

"But during the day it will feel muggier than normal."

At night, clear skies could mean cooler nights through Monday.

The winds are changing because of a weather system northwest of Kauai that is expected to weaken and move over Kauai and Oahu Monday evening.

The weather system is expected to bring showers, but not heavy rain Monday night into Tuesday.

Winds will shift from southerly to northwesterly.
