Maui firefighters save Haiku homes from 40-foot flames

Flames as high as 40 feet threatened homes in Haiku early Friday morning, Maui firefighters said.

A brush fire broke out at 3:29 a.m. near North Holokai Road.

A Maui County Fire Department spokesman said firefighters were able to protect homes and stop the fire's advance. The fire burned about 1.5 acres before being brought under control by crews from Paia, Makawao and Kahului.

Firefighters contained the blaze by 4 a.m. and extinguished it at 4:43 a.m.

No property was damaged and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
