A 3-year-old boy died Wednesday from injuries he received after he fell out of the cab of a pickup truck and then was run over on the road shoulder off Route 190 in Kalaoa, North Kona.

The boy was identified as Joel Peter of a Kailua-Kona address.

Police received a call at 6:41 p.m. from Kona Community Hospital reporting the crash.

The driver of the truck, 38-year-old Pedro Peter, drove the boy to the hospital, where the child was pronounced dead at 6:43 p.m.

The driver’s wife and three girls who were in the cab, as well as two male relatives in the truck bed, were not injured.

A police investigation revealed that the boy’s sister thought their father had parked the truck. She opened the rear passenger door and the boy fell out.

The father, not knowing that the boy had fallen out, continued up the driveway and ran over the child.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers arrested Peter on suspicion of negligent homicide, no operator’s license, no no-fault insurance and four counts of not having child restraints.

He was also arrested for an outstanding warrant for failure to appear.

Police do not suspect speed, alcohol or drugs to be factors in this crash.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Umm Allie, the cab is where he belongs. Where do you think he should have been. Of course, he should have been in a car seat. So, so sad.

OK I'll bite, if your mom didn't put you in the cab... Did you sit on the bumper, the hood, the roof, the bed or hang on the door?

"The driver’s wife and three girls who were in the cab, as well as two male relatives in the truck bed" We don't know what kind of truck it was, whether it was an extended cab (limited seating) or a 4-door cab (regular seating). Furthermore, simplysheila is right. If transporting a baby/child, s/he belongs in the "cab", not the front seat and definitely not the bed where it is "outlawed".

yup..cab refers to the back of the pickup and no child of any age should be there.

Actually boy genius, the cab is where the back seats of a truck are located, the back of the truck is called the truck bed.

Allie are you really that lame? The cab is where the driver and passengers sit, the bed of the truck is in the back.

So much grief over the years resulting from people riding in pickup beds. In re. Allie's comment, I thought it was illegal. But the poor dad. It's so easy to make mistakes like that.

Some mistake! Not having a 3 year-old properly belted in a child restraint seat! As well as all the other violations. No license and a warrant to boot.

What is wrong with this man? A child should be in a child's safety seat and he decides to place him in the truck bed. This man should be locked up for reckless endangerment of a child.

What is disturbing is that we have laws regarding seat belts but we allow people to ride in the truck bed where there are no safety features and was not meant to haul human beings. The laws should be changed to disallow the use of truck beds to haul people.

you guys must have failed reading comprehension. the article says he was in the cab and not the bed....two male adults were in the bed of the truck. all of the adults in this failed to use their heads and a child is lost because of their decision. may he rest in peace.....

First of all where does it say he WASN"T in a car seat? It says" boy’s sister thought their father had parked the truck. She opened the rear passenger door and the boy fell out. " Older siblings and a 3 year old can release themselves from car seats. You are assumming no car seat.. This was a tragic accident. This little girl life is ruined knowing she caused her brothers death. This young boy's life has ended. Say a pray for him . Yet we are fighting about what a bed or cab of a truck is.. .... Go home hug your kids or your neighbors kids

Geez, internet trolls, people failing reading comprehension...... no wonder society is going downhill. And after putting in some logic, I think we can conclude that it was a 4-door cab as you can't just swing open an extended cab door without opening the front door hence someone would notice that the door was open. It had to be a 4 door cab if the boy's sister was able to open the door herself. Also, for those who obviously don't know anything about trucks, the "cab" is where you transport people. The "bed" is the open air area at the rear of the truck and contrary to belief, there is a law in place for passengers riding in the BED of a truck.
