Schools in the Waimea area on Hawaii island were locked down Friday morning after a student reported that a man approached a 10-year-old Waimea Elementary School boy.

Police said they were informed of the suspicious incident at 7:56 a.m. but the lockdown was lifted at 8:35 a.m. after the boy informed officials that the man was his relative and they were playing.

The school, with 564 students, was placed in lockdown while police investigated the incident and searched the campus at 67-1225 Mamalahoa Ave.

The lockdown affected several charter and private schools in Kamuela area.

Patti Cook, community liaison for Waimea Middle Public Conversion Charter School, said that besides the Waimea Elementary School whose facilities are adjacent to her school, Kanu O Ka Aina Charter School, Kamehameha Schools Pre-School and a nearby Montessori school were also affected.
