The 31-year-old Hilo man accused of shooting two Hawaii County police officers earlier this month was released from the hospital today and is scheduled to make his initial court appearance this afternoon.

Keaka D. Martin was charged on Jan. 4 with two counts of first-degree attempted murder, second-degree reckless endangering and various weapons charges.

Martin was returned to the Hilo police cellblock with no bail after being released from Hilo Medical Center pending his initial court appearance this afternoon

Martin shot himself in the chest at a home on East Palai Street in Hilo before authorities arrested him Jan. 3.

He allegedly shot two officers Jan. 2, who were checking parked vehicles in the 800 block of Kilauea Avenue.
