The fire department’s hazardous materials team spent 90 minutes this morning trying to determine the composition of a white substance found by a state worker in one of the offices of the Department of Land and Natural Resources on Punchbowl Street.

Capt. Terry Seelig, Fire Department spokesman, said Hazmat officials responded to the 8:50 a.m. alarm after a worker in DLNR’s land division section found a bag with white powder. It took fire officials, police and deputy sheriffs 90 minutes to evaluate the substance before the an all clear was issued at 10:15 .m.

“Nothing threatening was found,” Seelig said.

The building did not have to be evacuated.

The land division is located at an isolated location on the second floor.

The investigated for around two hours and then deemed that no one had to be evacuated? What would have happened if the powder was hazardaous? Kinda too late to start evacuating then huh?
