Hikers seriously injured falling into Honokaa gulch

A Hawaii County couple are in the hospital after they fell into a gulch in Honokaa on Sunday.

Hawaii County Fire Department said the 42-year-old man had fallen 60 feet in a steep gulch beneath the bridge at the 33-mile marker of Highway 19. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

A 27-year-old woman, who had fallen 30 feet, was taken in serious condition to a local hospital. The accidents occurred just before 8 p.m.
