LAST UPDATED: 07:45 a.m. HST, Jan 16, 2013

A Kalihi shopper foiled an attempt by a 21-year-old man who allegedly tried to rob a store near Kuhio Park Terrace public housing Tuesday afternoon.

Police said suspect entered the Kalihi store at 4:45 p.m. armed with a handgun and demanded money from the cashier. A struggle followed when the cashier refused to give into to the suspect’s demands. When a customer stepped in, the suspect fled and was caught near the public housing.

He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree robbery.

The cashier suffered minor injuries, but refused medical treatment.

Check your facts. Illinois is the only state that does not allow carrying concealed weapons. And do you actually believe Hawaii would be a better place if shoppers carried loaded guns? Have you had the opportunity to shoot a robber? How many have you shot? I just hope I never shop where you do.

How did the customer foil the robbery other than just walking in? It seems like the story is stating that the customer actually "foiled" the robber which would mean he or she took some kind of action beyond entering the building. And was the customer involved in the capture of the robber? Kudos to the customer if he did indeed "foil" the robbery.
