A 26-year-old man has been charged for firing at least six shots at three people on New Year’s Day in the Salt Lake area.

Arrested and charged with one count of suspicion of first-degree attempted murder, three counts of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and firearms and ammunition violations, was Rodney J. Whipple, who listed no local address when he was arrested on Firday.

Police said the suspect confronted three victims — a 33-year-old man, 32-year-old man and 25-year-old female — early at about 2:25 a.m. Jan. 1 and fired at least six shots.

A bullet grazed one of the victims, who was treated on-scene by Emergency Medical Services, police said.

The suspect was identified by two of the victims and arrested at 3 p.m.

One of the victims also told police the suspect allegedly threw a glass during a dispute at a nightclub two weeks ago.
