Conference expansion leaves UH football with conundrum

The Mountain West Conference's expansion to 12 games and addition of a championship game has left the University of Hawaii with a dilemma:

What to do with its scheduled Dec. 7 home game with Brigham Young?

Because it will have 12 teams, the MWC will be able to hold a championship game between the winners of the two divisions. The conference announced today via Twitter that it will hold that title game Dec. 7 at the site of the highest-ranked team, according to Bowl Championship Series rankings.

UH athletic director Ben Jay said, " I will have to talk to them (BYU)."

The conference said UH will be in the Western Division of the new-look MWC season, the conference announced on Twitter this morning.

Joining the Warriors in the West will be Fresno State, Nevada, San Diego State, San Jose State and Nevada-Las Vegas.

The Eastern Division will be composed of Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, Utah State and Wyoming.

I really wish we could start the season one week earlier than everyone else. It would give us back the benefits of having the "Hawaii Exemption." I wonder if the NCAA would ever consider that...

Move them up to Sept 28. They play Utah the week before and USU the week after... Our schedule isn't set yet, so should work out. But we lose a bye week.

If we don't qualify for the championship game then all this talk of moving the BYU game will be moot. I hope we are allowed a week earlier too. I emailed J Donovan a few years ago, since most big school conferences will have a championship game and takes away most big name opponents in early December, to petition the NCAA to start our season a week earlier as part of the Hawaii exemption.

I wish the championship game was at a neutral site. Or possibly in Las Vegas each year. :) Don't think UNLV will be in that championship game anytime soon.

Is UH really going to compete for the Mountain West West? More importantly... Is that what they are going to call the sub conferences? Mountain West-East and Mountain West-West?

The MWC has announced it will call the divisions "Mountain" and "West". Makes sense.

Welcome back to the WAC, I mean the West Conference of the Mountain West! Hope the cost for season tickets don't go up for this schedule. UNLV and SJSU? Even though SJSU probably would punish us! Oh well...Go Warriors!

Simple solution: Play BYU earlier in the season and have the Championship game on Dec 7th at a neutral site -- Aloha Stadium! Might even fit in team visits to Pearl Harbor as part of the festivities.
