LAST UPDATED: 5:25 p.m. HST, Jan 23, 2013

The only survivor in this morning’s head-on collision on Hawaii island — a 7-year-old boy — has died.

He was initially flown by fire helicopter to the Kona Community Hospital in critical condition after the 10:17 a.m. crash on Highway 11 near Pahala.

West Hawaii Battalion Chief Steve Loyola confirmed the death and said the boy was a passenger in the car.

Four adults, three men and a woman, were found dead at the scene of the accident involving a Ford 350 truck, which was engulfed in flames, and a white Nissan Altima sedan.

There was no immediate information about which victims were in the truck or sedan.

There was extensive front-end damage to a truck and the sedan.

Firefighters found the truck in the Hilo-bound lanes when they arrived at the crash site at 10:24 a.m. In the Kona-bound lane was the Altima.

The accident occurred at 10:17 a.m. near the Punaluu Stream bridge

Hawaii County police closed portions of Highway 11 at the 54-mile marker just south of Pahala in both directions but reopened it in the afternoon.
