'Hawaii Five-0' star knocks Hawaii on late-night TV

By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 03:33 p.m. HST, Jan 25, 2013

Hawaii apparently is no paradise for Scott Caan, who plays Danny "Danno" Williams on the CBS series "Hawaii Five-0."

In an appearance on E!'s "Chelsea Lately" talk show Thursday night, the actor told host Chelsea Handler that he hasn't been able to adjust to the slower pace of island living — a sentiment he shares with his "Five-0" character, an ex-New Jersey cop.

"Everything is very slow motion. Everything is too relaxed for me. I like to hustle, and there's no hustle there," Caan said.

He also talked about surfing, which he said was more about "survival" here, and said the food in Hawaii "sucks."

You suck at that too. Malibu? Best place to surf in the world? That's because you don't know how to surf. Nobody taught you correctly. The food in Hawaii sucks? We have some of the best chefs and food in the world. What do you know! You only eat from the catering truck.

Excellent comment, Graham. One need only go to the Hawai'i Actors Network website to see that there are many qualified actors who live here, love Hawai'i, work at their craft and are much better suited to be on "5-0" than Caan. Joji Yoshida, Scott Rogers and Teddy Wells come to mind. There are probably a hundred others who would act circles around Caan. He's lucky his dad is a good actor, or we'd have never heard of him.

I'd have to agree with most of what Caan said. It is a slow pace here, usually because you're stuck in traffic. There's not much to do here, once you've done everything three or four times. I'd also agree that the food does suck, unless you're able to pay to go to the upscale restaurants for the good stuff. It's out there, it just costs an arm and a leg unless you're talking Hawaiian food, which really does suck. If he's talking about plate lunch, for the most part that ain't food--it's just a mountain of carbs and calories. Surfing is "survival" if you're no good at it, which he apparently isn't. Better he sticks to the bunny sets if that's the case. People love Hawaii for what it is and that's fine. I used to love it, but it isn't the way it used to be and it's definitely not getting any better. Yeah, nice weather. Yeah, crime is relatively under control. Other than that, what's so great? Sure isn't the cost of living. Sure isn't the aloha, which seems in short supply from what I've seen. Since the new hawaii 50 came out, I watched just one episode not even 3 mins and changed the channel b/c i was disgusted with the show. This new cast of characters are a disgrace to the old show. But I go out of my way to watch the old hawaii 50 b/c those bunch of guys were classy. Here again we have another TRANSPLANT to hawaii who just b/c he's being here a little while thinks he knows it all. C'mon guys what big blockbuster movies do you guys remember this guy acting in.....that's right none. Now jack lord had it made in hollywood; he was already a star when he came here. And what I remember the most about him is once he came to hawaii he said he would never leave, cos he LOVED IT!!!! Now This guy is what they call a B actor or maybe C at that...only good for television cos he's a no talent side show and because daddy had to pull some strings to get him a job. I actually had to look up his name cos he's just, well unimpressionable & irrelevant. Go figure he had to come to hawaii to get a damn job.....how pathetic is that.

I guess what Bob Hope said a long time ago is true: Compared to Hawaii people, Califorians are pretty uptight in comparison. ;)

Consider the source of his comments, very little all around. Small hands, small feet, small mind and small .... oops! Yeah he speaks like a very tiny guy who can only look up hill. Hahaha! I can't wait to see him at one of my surf spots. Got to run him over! Hahahah.

Time to show this clown the door. Kill the character and get someone who respects who we are and why everyone else in the world knows we live in paradise. My dad worked with the 'Real' danno on the original five-o. He was class act who loved Hawaii and the people.

Kill that whole damn show. A stupid show by idiot clueless Hollywood writers, with NO concept of the local culture. Hopefully, this is the last season...and it's outta here.

I would drop this guy right now. He is no talent....NOTHING like his father. And to speak about Hawaii like that? Let's see if the producers have substance between their legs and fire this clown.

The original Danno would never have bad-mouthed Hawaii -- Scott Caan needs to go. I find it sad that no apology has been issue by CBS, Hawaii 5-0 producers, or the cast & crew. I am considering not watching the show anymore.

What a jerk...he has or had one of the best roles on prime time Television and he wants to flush that down the toilet. As for lousy food in Hawaii....where the heck has he been eating...the 50th state has some of the best restaurants in the world plus great iconic local dishes. Danno, your time is up...!!
