A 20-year-old Hickam airman died Friday from injuries he received earlier this month when he fell doing emergency repairs on a roof on base.

Airman First Class Rickey Wagoner, of Linden, Texas, died Jan. 25 from injuries he sustained after falling on Jan. 8 while doing emergency repairs to a wind-damaged roof.

He was with the 647th Civil Engineer Squadron and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Public Works Department.

The cause of the fall is being investigated by the Air Force and the Navy.

Why was this Airman not wearing OSHA required fall protection gear, required if working above a certain height. Where was the Airman's supervisor to ensure the person he was directly responsible was working safely? Was the supervisor and worker trained in fall protection? OSHA regs apply to everyone in DoD. The Hickam Safety Office has some work to do.
