A 28-year-old Kalihi man is in police custody after Hawaii Electric Co. security stopped him from hauling away copper wiring from a Salt Lake electrical substation early Wednesday morning.

Police said that two suspects allegedly broke into the substation on Salt Lake Boulevard between 3:45 and 4:20 a.m. and were in the process of taking ground copper wiring they had cut.

The two suspects fled. However, policed traced one of the suspects to a Halona Street address where he was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of attempted theft and two outstanding warrants.

Brazen thieves to steal from a company premises. Either they got "ba-ls", or they are plain stupid. No matter the main thing is they got caught and if punished justly, will result in the temporary hiatus of thefts at public installations, like swimming pools and ball parks.

As punishment, they should be made to rewire all the copper wire while the electricity is still on.

Stealing copper from an electrical sub-station? How stupid is that? I remember seeing a picture of a guy who had tried this stupid stunt. He was laying on a stretcher, burnt to a crisp, with his arm that had obviously been burned off laying on top of his body. Also on top of him was the huge bolt cutter he had used to gain access to the compound. Even a 5 year old cal tell you that you don't break into a sub-station to steal copper. Some people are just terminally stupid, I guess. This guy paid for his ill-thought venture with his life.
