Surf expected to reach 28 feet on some shores

A large northwest swell has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a high surf warning for the north- and west-facing shores of most islands from until 6 p.m. Friday.
The warning covers the north- and west-facing shores of Oahu, Kauai, Molokai and Niihau and the north-facing shores of Maui, forecasters said. A high surf advisory continues for Hawaii island.
The swell is expected to build tonight, bringing surf of 20- to 28-feet on north shores of Oahu, Kauai, Maui and Molokai and west shores of Kauai County. West shores of Oahu and Molokai will see 15 to 20 foot wave faces.
West shores of Hawaii island are under a high surf advisory with wave heights of 6 to 10 feet expected tonight.
The surf should start coming down on Friday.
Beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water and away from the shorebreak because of dangerous wave action and strong rip currents.
