Swell expected to peak today with waves up to 20 feet

A large northwest swell continues to impact much of Hawaii as a high surf warning for the north- and west-facing shores of most islands remains in effect until 6 p.m. today.
The warning covers the north- and west-facing shores of Kauai, Molokai and Niihau and the north-facing shores of Oahu and Maui, forecasters at the National Weather Service said. A high surf advisory continues for the west-facing shore of Oahu and Hawaii island.
Weather officials expect the swell to peak early today, though diminishing later tonight, bringing surf of 15 to 20 feet on north shores of Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Molokai and Niihau and west shores of Kauai and Niihau. West shores of Molokai will see 15 to 20 foot wave faces.
West shores of Oahu and Hawaii island are under a high surf advisory with wave heights of 10 to 18 feet expected today.
The surf should start coming down this evening.
Beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water and away from the shorebreak because of dangerous wave action and strong rip currents.
