An 83-year-old Aiea woman was killed this morning after she was hit by a garbage truck.

Honolulu Police Lt. Robert Towne said the garbage truck had just picked up a trash can and was backing up, when it hit the woman and ran her over with the rear tire.

Officials believe the woman was crossing the street at the corner of Kupukupu and Kupuwao streets.

I feel bad that this happened, but I see staunchly far too many people crossing roads without looking or without a care in the world. That attitude will get a person killed often as in this case. Prayers for her family. Gosh, 22. That is way too young.

I don't blame the garbage truck driver. Pedestrians and passenger vehicles have to be aware of their surroundings and the potential dangers. Anyone who walks behind a large work vehicle like this should expect the worst. I feel bad for both the old woman and for the poor truck driver who has to live with the result of the woman's momentary lack of judgement.
