No tsunami threat to Hawaii after 2 more quakes in South Pacific

Two earthquakes struck in the South Pacific overnight — one strong and one major — but pose no tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The first temblor struck at 1:12 a.m. Hawaii time and was a 6.8-magnitude earthquake centered 13 miles southeast of Lata, Solomon Islands at a depth of 11.2 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The second temblor struck at 5:26 a.m. and was a 7.0-magnitude earthquake centered 16 miles southwest of Lata at a depth of 16.7 miles, according to USGS officials.
