BEIJING (AP) — Beijing police say two people were stabbed to death in a fight at a worker's cafeteria inside the city's famed Forbidden City tourist attraction.

A police statement says a stabbing report was received shortly before noon Friday. Responding officers found one person dead at the scene, and another died after receiving medical attention.

An injured suspect surnamed Zheng was found in a nearby office and sent to a hospital. The two victims and the 49-year-old suspect were identified as employees of one of the many departments within the vast complex. No information was given about a motive.

The former imperial palace, which was built starting in 1406, is made up of more than 980 buildings and houses almost 2 million historical artifacts. It receives about 60,000 visitors daily.

Two people being stabbed to death would barely warrant a mention in the newspapers of most U.S. metropolitan areas. What a sad commentary on our society.
