The accident occurred at 7 a.m. when the officer’s SUV rolled into a irrigation ditch near the Dole Plantation on Kamehameha Highway.

Police said the officer, who has 13 years of service with the department, was investigating a burglary complaint when a dirt embankment gave way and the vehicle rolled onto its side.

Emergency Medical Services reported that the victim is his 60s and was taken in serious condition to a hospital at 8:15 a.m.

Firefighters helped free the police officer at 7:55 a.m.
