House votes unanimously to repeal public land agency

State House lawmakers, acknowledging that they made a mistake two years ago in creating the Public Land Development Corp., voted unanimously today to repeal the law.

The PLDC was granted broad exemptions from land use regulations to attract private developers to projects on underused state lands. But the state agency has not developed a single project because of public opposition.

"We all make mistakes, and it was a mistake that we passed it out. And we're glad that (we were) able to rectify it — not all the time it happens," House Speaker Joseph Souki told reporters after the vote. "And this Legislature was very courageous to listen to the public and to admit that it made a mistake."

The state Senate Ways and Means Committee has scheduled a hearing for Friday morning on a PLDC repeal.

Senate President Donna Mercado Kim said the Senate will likely vote for its version of a PLDC repeal or the House version.

BS Souki and Kim. You folks knew very well what you passed last year and since the legislature wasn't about to get away with it now you repeal it. There was absolutely no conscience last year when most of you if not all of you with Sen. Dela Cruz and the Governor gloating over it passage. The people weren't as dumb as you took them for, Maybe the voters will finally wake up in 2014. But we'll just have to wait and see.

The public spoke loud and clear. Souki says everyone makes mistakes but if not for the public outcry, PDLC would be alive and doing Hawaii disservice.

GREAT NEWS! But I wish they would STOP calling it "public lands." It is NOT public lands. It is CROWN LANDS.

Our kupuna never ceded any land or title to anyone else or to any entity. Please stop lying and stealing. It teaches LOCAL kids to do the same.

Mahalo to ALL who voted to repeal the PLDC though. It is much appreciated!!!

Well done. All it took was screaming and yelling and shaking fists at the politi-weasels until they realized it was a bone head plan from the start. But at least they saw the light!
