Maui County and Hawaii island are under flood watches through Friday as heavy rains flooded  roads on the Valley island. A winter storm warning is also posted for Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa with up to a foot of snow possible on the summits.

The National Weather Service canceled a flash flood watch for Maui, which was hit hard by flooding and heavy rains.

A winter storm warning is also posted for Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.

The winter storm warning, which lasts until 6 p.m. Friday, says from 6 to 12 inches of snow could accumulate above 10,500 feet and that wind gusts of up to 25 are possible. The heaviest snowfall is expected overnight.

A flood advisory for Hawaii island lasts until 2:15 a.m. with rainfall heavy over the Hilo and Puna. Minor flooding has been reported in Paradise Park and Waiakea Uka, the National Weather Service reports. The advisory covers, but is not limited to, Waipio Valley, Paauilo, Ookala, Laupahoehoe, Honokaa, Hawi and Hakalau.

The public is advised to avoid camping and hiking near streams or low-lying areas.

The flash flood watch  for Maui and Hawaii island are in effect until late Friday night.

Forecasters expect heavy showers, mainly along windward slopes. But afternoon heating may also bring showers to leeward areas.
