Strong earthquake strikes Kuril Islands, poses no threat to Hawaii

A magnitude-6.9 earthquake that struck the Kuril Islands this morning does not pose a tsunami threat to Hawaii, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The temblor struck at 4:05 a.m. Hawaii time and was centered 53 miles southeast of Ozernovskly, Russia at a depth of 32.6 miles, a report from the U.S. Geological Service said.

No injuries were immediately reported.
