Police dispatcher Chuck Stewart said the crashes late this morning were reported 16 minutes apart near the interstate's 83 mile-marker. The first crash occurred in the northbound lanes of I-65 at 11:13 a.m. and the second in the southbound lanes at 11:29 a.m.

Stewart said five people are confirmed dead in the first crash and one person is confirmed dead in the second crash.
