Kauai Fire Department personnel rescued a woman Friday afternoon who hurt her ankle while hiking in Kokee.

The visitor from Australia, 56, was hiking along the Pihea trail when she hurt her ankle around 3:23 p.m., fire officials said. Multiple fire trucks and a rescue helicopter responded to the call that came in minutes later, although the helicopter was forced to return to the airport due to heavy rain and fog.

Firefighters hiked in, located the woman and brought her out to the trailhead on a wheeled basket stretcher where she was transported to the hospital, officials said.
