General from Hawaii to receive second star

Army Brig. Gen. Clarence K. K. Chinn, who grew up in Hawaii, has been selected to receive his second star as a major general, the Pentagon announced today.

Army Brig. Gen. Clarence K. K. Chinn, who grew up in Hawaii, has been selected to receive his second star as a major general, the Pentagon announced today.

Chinn is in Afghanistan currently serving as deputy commander for the Regional Command-East, which is a component of the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command. Regional Command East is made up of 14 provinces covering 43,000 square miles, approximately the size of Ohio and sharing 450 miles of border with Pakistan. 

Both Ching and his wife, Val, were raised on Oahu where his parents still live.

Their son, Jared, plays ice hockey for the Nanaimo Clippers in Canada, and their daughter, Ashley, plays on an ice hockey team for Adrian College.

Chinn is a 1981 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point.

From March 1999 to May 2001, Chinn commanded the 4th Ranger Training Battalion at Camp Rogers, Fort Benning, Georgia. 

Chinn, from July of 2004 to July of 2006, commanded the Ranger Training Brigade. Later, he was assigned to the U.S. Special Operations Command at MacDill Air Force Base until June 2008.

In January 2011, Chinn became the commanding general of the Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk.

He deployed to Afghanistan in November.
