Former police officer sentenced to 8 months for growing marijuana

A federal judge sentenced former Honolulu police officer Michael Steven Chu this morning to eight months in jail for conspiring to grow and possess marijuana to sell.

U.S. District Chief Judge Susan Oki Mollway gave Chu until Feb. 13 to turn himself in to begin serving his sentence.

Chu’s girlfriend, Athena Sui Lee, will be sentenced next month.

Drug Enforcement Administration agents arrested Chu and Lee last April as they were about to enter Lee’s Kapiolani Boulevard apartment. Chu was carrying fertilizer and other material used for growing plants indoor.

DEA agents found an indoor marijuana growing operation in the apartment and another one in a house Chu was renting in Mililani. The agents also found a pound of processed marijuana in Chu’s vehicle.
