Three manholes along Iona Road on Hanapepe spewed roughly 200 gallons of sewage this morning, Kauai County officials said.

The sewage overflow was reported around 9:15 a.m. and most of the mess was cleaned up by 10 a.m., officials said.

Faulty pump controls at the nearby Hanapepe sewage pump station were believed to have caused the spill. Officials said county wastewater staff is working to repair the system.

Crews remained on scene into the afternoon to disinfect the area.
