A 27-year-old man was hospitalized in critical condition after he apparently fell 30-40 feet while hiking along the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail this afternoon.

The incident happened about 1 p.m. near the Hawaii Kai side lighthouse, a supervisor for the city Division of Emergency Services said.

The victim, who apparently is in the military and stationed here, climbed to an area outside the actual trail above the Hawaii Kai lighthouse, lost his footing and fell, said Capt. James Todd of the Honolulu Fire Department.
