By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 10:28 p.m. HST, Jan 14, 2013

A baby whale stranded on a reef just off of Kawaikui Beach Park today died shortly after being administered a sedative to ease its suffering, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration official has confirmed.

The whale, which was discovered partially tangled in a fishing net earlier in the day, died about 8:40 p.m., according to David Schofield, manager of NOAA Regional Marine Mammal Health and Response Program.

The whale’s remains will be sent to Hawaii Pacific University to determine the cause of death and then cremated.

The ashes will be given to Hawaiian cultural practitioners for ceremonial disposal.
