A 15-year veteran Coast Guardsman who surfaced Sunday after disappearing four months ago and touching off an extensive air, land and water search is the subject of an investigation into drug use, a Coast Guard spokesman said today.

At the time of his disappearance, Petty Officer 1st Class Russell Matthews was being investigated for illegal use of drugs, specifically marijuana, said Coast Guard spokesman Chief Warrant Officer Gene Maestas. Illegal drug use is an offense that could result in a Coast Guard member’s discharge.

Matthews turned up at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, police said in a CrimeStoppers bulletin issued Tuesday.

The father of two showed up at his wife’s North Shore home but did not live there, Maestas said.

More than that, probably had been on a binge of designer drugs rendering or causing him to become incoherent. His brains must be frizzled. Simply pupule! Too bad! Had a very important, exciting and interesting occupation. Sad.

What's sad is you jumping to illogical conclusions, as usual. Don't you have anything better to do with your time?

shame on all you people making assumptions/jokes about what he might be going through. What if the guy got struck with amnesia? Or maybe he started having schizophrenia or something like that. Don't talk smack unless you actually know, or else you know what happens-- bachi....

I am very happy that this man is alive. When the story broke, I was one that opined that he ran away and the search needed to end after 3 days.Something feels terribly wrong with his sudden appearance. I wish him well but this story is not over.

Does not give the name of the photographer. Almost always the HSA asks for the photographer's name. HSA must have been desperate to get the pic, if it allowed it to be published without the name of the photographer.

"Honolulu Police Sgt. Kim Buffett of Crimestoppers said Matthews isn't giving the police a statement because he's in the hospital. Detectives have no reason to pursue the case as it's not against the law to be missing, she said." Great, otherwise u guys at HSA would send a detective to my front door to try to find out why i go missing on these forums for months at a time. In the world of the bear, it is called hibernation. In the world of human beings it is called The United States of America. Really, for example, about a year ago, i had no idea that Ben Cayetano had decided to run for mayor. So being away has its advantages. Almost like returning from the dead lol and i am not referring to Ben, i am just talking, although returning from the dead sounds good in relation to Ben. Just an ad lib.
