SUV flips on H-1 freeway onramp

A sports utility vehicle flipped over on the Pali Highway on-ramp to the Ewa-bound H-1 Freeway this morning. (Photo courtesy Vince Leong)

A 38-year-old man went to the hospital in serious condition this morning when the sport utility vehicle he was driving flipped on the Pali Highway onramp to the  H-1 freeway.

The SUV was traveing Ewa when the accident occurred at 8:45 a.m., Emergency Medical Services reported.

Had to be speeding on a wet road on a curve. That's coming out of the short tunnel on Punchbowl St. by Jiffy Lube. Cars have to merge from 2 lanes to 1 before the tunnel. A lot of times the car in the right lane wants to rush and get in to the left lane.

But the 2 cars will have collided before they get out of that tunnel. The exit is too narrow. So you'd have two cars lying there. Plus it wouldn't cause a car to flip.

I surmise someone trying to merge from Punchbowl St. force their way in and the SUV swerved up the embankment to avoid the merging vehicle. It seems sometimes those exiting from H-1 to the Pali Highway don't want to let someone merge in.

It was single car accident. The West bound Pali off from the H1 freeway is short and at a somewhat sharp angle. IF you drive the speed limit on this offramp you will have no problem. HOWEVER if you speed getting offmthe off ramp you will have to make a quick steering correction and combined with a wet road, SUV with high center of gravity and worn tires, under acceleration the vehicle can fishtail and if the driver cannot settle the car down will lose control and like someone suggested, drive up the embankment and roll back, ending upside side.
