Okino nomination withdrawn after anti-gay remarks

By Star-Advertiser staff

POSTED:
LAST UPDATED: 03:10 p.m. HST, Jan 25, 2013

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell sent a letter to the City Council today withdrawing Gary Okino’s nomination to the city Ethics Board of Appeals in the wake of a furor over comments made regarding his opinion of homosexuals.

“There is no place for discrimination of any kind in city government, and even though Mr. Okino stated he would not discriminate if he was appointed as a member of the Ethics Board of Appeals, I find his position on the gay community to be a problem,” Caldwell said in a release issued this afternoon.

Okino was nominated by former Mayor Peter Carlisle and he was queried by members of the City Council Executive Matters and Legal Affairs Committee on Tuesday.

Okino told committee members “I have no tolerance for homosexuals” and that gay people “are in danger not only spiritually but physically.”

Okino’s nomination was moved out of committee 7-0, with members Ikaika Anderson and Stanley Chang absent.

Both Anderson and Chang announced today that they would vote to reject Okino’s nomination at a scheduled final vote before the full Council Wednesday.

Then that makes YOU a ignorant bigot as well, because you refuse to accept his religious stance on the matter. Not once did I hear him say he hated homosexuals, but rather the act of homosexuality itself. There's a big difference. I am truly amazed that Senator Mike Gabbard has not come out in support of Gary Okino's personal opinion. Has he become more tolerant of the liberal agenda of homosexual marriages and abortion? Consider this, if there were no abortions who would have to care for the babies or what about the people who go to the orient to adopt children. Why? Aren't we all estatic that our Hawaii State Legislators saw fit to repeal the strict sodomy laws so it became legal to do so? Soon we will have legalized marijuna use in Hawaii since we have some of the best in the U.S. which we could export to the rest of the world. I recall that there was once a coca farm on the Windward side of Oahu so we could then legalize cocaine for export to the rest of the world too. What is Hawaii coming to? Are we to become another Sodom and Gomorrah?

A typical Democrat like the new Mayor Caldwell would not support "common sense." Gary Okino was speaking the truth. We live in a political correctness cultural that says Evil is Good, and Good is Evil. Garu Okino spoke the truth about his views (I agree with his views) on homosexuality. Gary Okino was not afraid to stand up for the truth. While others are intiminated more like cowards and afraid to offend. Like many, many others, Gary Okino we stand with you.
