Hotel expansion on Lanai envisioned by island's new owner

By Andrew Gomes

LAST UPDATED: 01:48 p.m. HST, Jan 25, 2013

A new hotel on Lanai is part of the vision of the island's new owner, billionaire Larry Ellison.

Representatives of Ellison's Lanai Resorts LLC shared the plans with community members at a meeting today, according to one person who had a representative at the meeting.

The hotel would be small but very high end on an oceanfront site once occupied by a day-trip activity operation known as Club Lanai.

Other parts of Ellison's vision include expanding solar energy production, a possible desalinization plant, increased farming and an expanded airport runway.

Lanai Resorts officials could not be reached for immediate comment.

The hotel is for his rich friends. He's going to turn Lanai into an exclusive resort for the rich and famous.

Anything to improve that island's economy. I love Lanai and go there a lot, but honestly, I don't think visitors could support another hotel. Unless Ellison will eat the losses.

Of course he was going to expand, its like a private island because he owns so much. What are the politicians going to do? Tell him no? He already bought them off.
