Crews fix downed power line in Waikiki

Crews have fixed a downed power line that shut down the Ewa-bound lanes of Kuhio Avenue between Kapahulu and Liliuokalani avenues for most of Sunday, a HECO spokeswoman said. 

Power was restored to the remaining 65 customers at 4:35 p.m., company spokeswoman Janet Crawford said. 

Police closed the road around 11 p.m. Saturday after a vehicle crashed into the pole. 

Crawford said about 645 customers were without power when the pole was first struck. Emergency Medical Services did not report any injuries related to the crash.  

Crawford said telephone lines were also affected when the pole came down.

Oceanic Time Warner Cable customers were not affected, a company customer service representative said. 

Crawford said that Oceanic cleared its downed lines from the scene by about 9:30 a.m., and HECO crews began removing damaged pole to erect a new one. She said telephone lines had to be re-strung before the power lines could go up, and underground work also had to be done to restore power.

In a separate outage today, 1,325 HECO customers in the Makiki area lost power around 3:36 p.m., Crawford said. 

She said HECO sent out a crew right away and the crew discovered that a small piece of equipment on a utility pole had broken. 

Power was gradually restored to two large groups of customers at first, and roughly 515 customers remained without power until 5:05 p.m. when the part was fixed.
