Crews have fixed a downed power line that shut down the Ewa-bound lanes of Kuhio Avenue between Kapahulu and Liliuokalani avenues for most of Sunday, a HECO spokeswoman said.

Power was restored to the remaining 65 customers at 4:35 p.m., company spokeswoman Janet Crawford said.

Police closed the road around 11 p.m. Saturday after a vehicle crashed into the pole.

Crawford said about 645 customers were without power when the pole was first struck. Emergency Medical Services did not report any injuries related to the crash.

Crawford said telephone lines were also affected when the pole came down.

Oceanic Time Warner Cable customers were not affected, a company customer service representative said.

Crawford said that Oceanic cleared its downed lines from the scene by about 9:30 a.m., and HECO crews began removing damaged pole to erect a new one. She said telephone lines had to be re-strung before the power lines could go up, and underground work also had to be done to restore power.

In a separate outage today, 1,325 HECO customers in the Makiki area lost power around 3:36 p.m., Crawford said.

She said HECO sent out a crew right away and the crew discovered that a small piece of equipment on a utility pole had broken.

Power was gradually restored to two large groups of customers at first, and roughly 515 customers remained without power until 5:05 p.m. when the part was fixed.

The Kuhio accident appears (as far as I can tell) to contain errors. My own sources report that a car did hit a reinforced metal streetlight pole about 50 feet from the intersection of Kapahulu and Kuhio, but the pole did not topple or fall. The front of the car was totaled, however. A few seconds BEFORE the crash, a wood electrical pole at the intersection snapped about 1/3 from the top. The base of the pole at street level appeared to be undamaged. In the interest of pedestrian safety, it would be helpful to verify why the pole snapped. If it wasn't a car running into it, was it due to spontaneous structural failure of the pole? I for one wouldn't have wanted to to be walking in that spot when it failed. It's also a little mysterious why a car 50 feet away from the snapped pole would suddenly swerve off the road and hit the light post. Was she blinded by a flash of light as the pole snapped. Startled by the noise of the pole cracking? Another car in front of her suddenly braked, forcing her swerve off?

Correction -- 15 feet, not 50.
