Hawaiian Airlines loses $3.4 million in quarter

By Dave Segal

LAST UPDATED: 01:57 p.m. HST, Jan 29, 2013

Hawaiian Airlines’ parent company said today it posted a $3.4 million loss in the fourth quarter as a weakening yen, excess capacity in some markets and an accounting charge depressed earnings.

The state’s oldest and largest carrier, which has been rapidly expanding over the last two-plus years, had a profit of $20.9 million in the year-earlier quarter.

Revenue, though, jumped 13.6 percent to $493 million from $433.8 million.

Won't be surprised if they start charging more for aisle seats, and increasing checked baggage fees again. Can't wait for Southwest to arrive and give them real competition.. FYI Southwest does not charge for the 1st checked bag.

As our state's largest inter-island carrier, I really wish HA allows the traveler a break from the baggage fees -- and offer discounted prices for those with proof of residency. HA is just about our only means of convenient transport between the islands, they dominate the inter-island air market here. Remember your home grown roots, PLEASE!

Over zealous expansion can come back to haunt you. A crap game for sure if you don't do your home-work. Bigness in every instance does not equate to large profits. Efficiency is the answer, revenue over costs, plain and simple.

oops sent for approval for just stating a plain business sense. Guess it does not please SA if you critic Hawaiian over expansion plans.

The airline overestimated its own appeal and power in the Japanese market where the flights serving Fukuoka and Sapporo are not doing so well. Plus, the flights from Haneda Airport in Tokyo to Honolulu are higher than rival carriers.

With the ridiculous fares and baggage fees they charge since becoming the defacto monopoly in this state, there is no way short of poor management, that this airline should be losing money.
