No tsunami threat from magnitude 6.9 earthquake in Japan

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake on the northern island of Hokaido, Japan did not generate a destructive tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said this morning.

The deep earthquake struck on land at 4:17 a.m. Hawaii time or 11:17 p.m. Japan time about 68 miles west of Kushiro, Hokaido, Japan at a depth of 64 miles, the United States Geological Survey said.

The location in the Tokachi region in southern Hokkaido is about 89 miles east south east of Sapporo, Japan and 525 miles north north east of Tokyo.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said, based on available data, there is not threat of a tsunami for Hawaii.

There were no immediate reports of damage or serious injuries.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK says nearby nuclear power plants, including Tomari and Higashidori, which are currently idled for safety inspections, have reported no abnormalities.
