Shark warning signs taken down at Nanakuli Beach Park

Lifeguards took down shark warning signs after no sharks were seen Sunday morning, a spokeswoman for the Ocean Safety Division said.

The warning signs went up after a shark, said to be aggressive and feeding, was seen offshore of Nanakuli Beach Park Saturday afternoon.

A spokeswoman for the Ocean Safety Division said lifeguards confirmed the sighting of the 8-foot shark and advised beach-goers to stay out of the water.

Shark warning signs were also posted at Nanakuli Beach Park on January 12. There were three shark sightings in October and November of last year.

Years ago, when fishermen caught a shark they would pull out the crab net and cut up the shark for crab bait or they would let it die on short and let the tide take the carcass out. Recent research has shown that decaying shark flesh and organs produce a chemical scent (detectable by other sharks extremely low concentrations) that is a powerful repellent for the same species.

the reason its happening more often is usually during the winter months in Hawaii between November and march the sharks start having there pups that's why you see a lot of shark sightings between November and march.
