Hawaii island man robs woman who gave him a ride

By Star-Advertiser staff

POSTED:

Hawaii island police are looking for a man in his 50s who allegedly robbed a 60-year-old Volcano woman of her vehicle Saturday in Puna after she offered the acquaintance a ride because he said his car had broken down.

She let the man drive her vehicle about 6 p.m. Saturday but he didn’t drive to the location of the disabled vehicle and went to another location in Mountain View, police said. He then allegedly assaulted the woman, pushed her out of the vehicle and then allegedly stole her vehicle.

The woman sustained injuries from the assault and from falling from the truck, but declined treatment.

The man is described as in his early to mid-50s, about 6 feet tall, with a medium build, a medium tan complexion, with long wavy brown hair just above the shoulder, unknown eye color and clean-shaven. He was wearing jeans and a long-sleeved, gray buttoned-down shirt. He also may speak with a slight lisp, police said.

Detectives have classified the case as a second-degree robbery and first-degree unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Wendell Carter or e-mail him at wcarter@co.hawaii.hi.us. Anonymous calls may be made to CrimeStoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.
