Hilo man charged with robbing 2 campers at Kolekole park

Hawaii County authorities have charged an 18-year-old Hilo man who allegedly robbed a man and woman who were camping at Kolekole Beach Park on Wednesday.

Tyler Taylor of Hilo was charged Friday night with first-degree robbery, third-degree criminal property damage, two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, two counts of first-degree unlawful imprisonment, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and two counts of second-degree theft.

Bail was set at $121,000.

Police said at 4:54 a.m. Wednesday, a man and woman, both 29, were camping at Kolekole Beach Park, when they awoke to a man who entered their tent, allegedly threatened them with a knife and took several of their possessions and demanded a key to their rental car.

Police said the man fled in the couple’s rented white Ford Mustang coupe. Police later recovered the abandoned car Wainaku.

Both victims went to a nearby residence to call police.
