KAILUA-KONA >> Hawaii County police said a Hakalau woman died in a two-car collision in North Kohala.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports that the 49-year-old woman died Saturday night at Kona Community Hospital from injuries she suffered earlier in the day.

Police said Theresa Doris Pacheco was headed south in a sedan when she swerved to avoid rear-ending another car. Police say she ended up sideswiping the right rear corner of the car and then ran off the right side of the road, where her car overturned.

The driver of the other car, a 62-year-old man from Atlanta, was not injured.

Police said Pacheco’s death is the eighth traffic fatality on Hawaii island this year, compared to one at the same time last year.

This may sound "Allie-like" but why are there so many accidents on the Big Isle?

GONE - that question is NOT ALL-LIE like if you've never been to the Big Isle. There are alot of wide open roads typical of rural areas so some folks will push their luck, unfortunately there are inevitably blind hills or turns that these folks don't take into consideration thinking that because they know the road "like the back of their hand" they can throw caution to the wind. I agree that's not very bright...sort of like ALL-LIE the dolt with a car.

It's a bad mix of locals driving like cunfuzd4 says and visitors who tend to slow down whenever they see something interesting or want to take a picture. Seems like that combo contributed to this particular accident. My sympathies to the Pacheco family.
