Authorities charged a 23-year-old Kona man with terroristic threatening in connection with menacing phone calls and text messages that led to the lockdown of four Waimea-area public schools Monday.

Lyle Kawika Pascubillo was being held at the Kona police cellblock on $4,000 bail after he was charged with two counts of first degree terroristic threatening.

On Monday, a 25-year-old Honokaa woman told Hawaii County police that she received threatening telephone calls and text messages. The text messages made reference to the threat of violent actions taking place at Honokaa School and Waimea Elementary School. The woman is not connected to the school, police said.

Police contacted officials at the two schools and notified them of the threats . As a precaution, school officials placed Honokaa Elementary, Honokaa High and Intermediate School, Waimea Elementary School and Waimea Middle School on lockdown for about three hours Monday morning.

Police determined the calls came from a residence in Kailua-Kona where patrol officers contacted and arrested the suspect. 

Hamakua District Police Capt. Richard Miyamoto described the threats as vague.
