Three Hawaii food and beverage industry professionals are semifinalists for the 2013 James Beard Foundation Restaurant and Chef awards, revered in the industry.

Chuck Furuya, of DK Restaurants headquartered on Maui, has been nominated as Outstanding wine, spirits or beer professional; Ed Kenney, chef and owner of Town restaurant in Kaimuki is among the nominees for Best Chef: West (California and Hawaii), and Quinten Frye of Salt Kitchen & Tasting Bar, also in Kaimuki, is among the nominees for Rising Star Chef of the Year.

The James Beard Foundation will release its list of finalists in March and present its annual awards in May.

Problem with both Town and Salt is they are in run down Kaimuki - look at the parking lot which is filthy with garbage, potholes, and cigarette butts. Then you have Town whose landscaping is full of weeds and debri - hardly what I would call "world class" but then again Honolulu is third world where the residents are complacent with the likes og Gensiro Kawamoto, massive homelessness and lets not forget the rail to no where running a muck!

Since when is Kaimuki "third world"? You reference Kawamoto but his digs are in Kahala, and the rail isn't the subject here so stay on topic. Take a closer look at those "weeds" the next time you're at town. Those are herbs Ed grows so they can use them fresh in their dishes. A lot of "world class" restaurants don't grow their own herbs.

The award is for food and wine, not landscaping, totally different subjects. Congrats to those nominated. I remember Chuck when he was working at Churchill's Inn, then Alioto's back in the 1970s and 1980s.
