Navy SEAL missing after Kaena Point ocean-swim training

The Coast Guard, Navy, Honolulu Ocean Safety and Honolulu Fire Department are searching for a Navy SEAL who was reported missing following ocean swim training Tuesday near Kaena Point.

The sailor became separated from other members of his command during the training Tuesday afternoon.

The Navy said the missing man is 34 years old and a special operator first class assigned to a Hawaii-based special-warfare unit.

The Navy said 10 sailors were training using rigid-hull inflatable boats.

An MH-65 dolphin helicopter crew out of Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point and a Coast Guard response boat were diverted from a training exercise at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to begin searching the area.

The Fire Department Air One helicopter and firefighters on land searched the sea and shoreline until nightfall. A Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules airplane crew joined the search at 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Nope, they were training out there just to get away from the normal routine. The Navy has plenty of training facilities where they can train and maintain control.
